Gardening in Mt. Sterling
A Gardener's Paradise

Kentucky is a great place to garden. We have long growing seasons‚ abundant rainfall‚ a mild climate in which many different kinds of plants thrive‚ and most of us are blessed with fertile soils. (Even clay‚ which many grumble at‚ is rich in nutrients.)

But the same factors that make this a gardener’s paradise also present some of the biggest challenges. Our long growing season generally means that we must fight more insects than gardeners in northern climates. While most of our winters are mild‚ they’re rarely predictable – temperatures can fall from 80 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit in a single day. Rainfall may also be too much – 15 inches in March – or too little – 1/2 inch in the heat of August.

But the pluses of gardening in our state far outweigh the minuses‚ as any gardener will tell you. It’s easy to have a great-looking yard. Simply match the amount of sunlight and the type of soil in various spots in your yard to plants that like those conditions. When plants are happy – that is‚ when they’re placed in the conditions they prefer – they grow well‚ resist insects and diseases better‚ and look great. And that’s what you’re aiming for.
